The first thing is always to know how to get internet connection in Mexico City, because that will help you to use Google Maps. In some cases there are companies that have free internet in Mexico, but not all, so what you can do before you go to buy a chip at the airport and maybe they sell it to you super expensive, you should know that there is free internet in almost the whole city, yes of course many locals will tell you that it sucks, but in my case it has gotten me out of many troubles and even video calls I have made with the free internet from Mexico City Government .

How to get internet in Mexico City?

Internet in Mexico City

In Mexico City Airport and in many other places in the city when you open your phone to look for a Wifi network, you will connect for free to the network called “Internet gratis para todos CDMX”, after you connect to this network, you must open a page or you will receive a notification on your cell phone and you must accept Terms and Conditions. Now, you can have free internet, just remember not to open applications such as your bank account because it is a public network and if there are hackers nearby you could have problems.

UBER, BEAT or DIDI

App of private transport service are also a good option, it is comfortable and safe. In Mexico we have UBER and BEAT, however if you want to save a little more money for the same service, I recommend DiDi, they are 3 economic and easy options, the difference is not much but sometimes it is good to have more than one app, just in case. They pick you up at any airport gate, just check if you are in Terminal 1 or 2. The price is variable depending on the distance and traffic (Mexico City occasionally has traffic), but the price can be between $5 to $20 USD in a normal car.

By the way, many taxi drivers will tell you that you are not allowed to take Uber, but in fact it is, as taxi fares are very expensive and many people when it’s their first time just go by what the taxi drivers say at the airport.

Metrobus

Bus in Mexico CIty

Metrobus is part of the public transportation network in Mexico City and can be a fast and cheap way to get to the center of the city; it costs $30 pesos MXN ($1.8 USD) and is open Monday to Saturday from 4:30 to 24:00 and Sunday from 5:00 to 24:00. It won’t take you to your exact destination, but it can get you closer and then complement it with UBER, Cabify or DiDi, so you can reduce costs and arrive comfortably. To take the Metrobus you will have to go to the official stations, in Terminal 1 at door number 7 and in Terminal 2 at door number 2. To use the Metrobus you need a card that you buy in the machines inside the airport, we recommend you bring cash to buy it.

Metro is the cheapest option $5 pesos MXN (0.25 USD), but it is the least comfortable. It is safe to travel on the metro, but depending on the time of day you may find it very crowded. The airport station is called “Terminal Aérea” and stations near the center where you can get off are: “Zócalo” “Bellas Artes” “Pino Suárez” and “Hidalgo”, tickets can be bought at the ticket office.

If you are staying in Roma or Condesa, perhaps the closest stations are Centro Medico or Chilpancingo on the brown line, check which station is closest to your location.

By the way, if you want to ask a local for directions on the metro, always tell them the colour of the line, not the number.

In general, you should choose the transport that is the best option for you considering your budget or comfort, taking into account that Mexico City is huge, so you should spend at least 45 minutes to 1.5 hours to get to your destination.

What else to do in Mexico City?

Mexico City has more than 200 neighborhoods, and walking through them can be very exhausting, that’s why maybe the best option is to do it by bike, because you can also try to explore it by car, but we have a lot of traffic and not much parking spaces.

Exploring Mexico City by bike and at the same time trying different street food is a way to get to know Mexico City more deeply through its parks, its food, its stories and its people.
