Keep in mind that getting an Uber directly in front of the arena can be difficult because of the number of people leaving at once. If needed, walk a few minutes toward a less crowded street or follow the flow of people until you find a place where a car can stop easily.
The most important thing is to use common sense, enjoy the experience, and remember that the crowd and the energy are part of what makes Lucha Libre special.
How to Have Fun at Your First Lucha Libre Match
My advice? Don’t overthink it. Just go and enjoy the experience.
You don’t need to know the entire history of Lucha Libre, memorize all the wrestlers, or understand every rule before you go. Lucha Libre is a show, a tradition, and an experience — not just a wrestling match.
Pick the luchador you like the most. Maybe you like their mask, their colors, their costume, their personality, or simply the way they fight. Support your favorite one, cheer for them, and enjoy the reactions from the people around you.
You will hear the entire arena shouting, laughing, and sometimes using strong language. Don’t be surprised — this is completely normal and part of the Lucha Libre culture. One of the classic chants you may hear from the crowd is “CU-LE-RO,” which roughly translates to “asshole” or “jerk” in this context. It is usually shouted jokingly at the opposing wrestler and is part of the traditional atmosphere inside the arena.
The best part of Lucha Libre is not only what happens inside the ring. It is the energy of thousands of people reacting together, the masks, the characters, and feeling part of a Mexican tradition.
Just relax, choose your favorite, and enjoy the show.
How to Make a Full Night Out of Your Lucha Libre Experience
My recommendation? Don’t make Lucha Libre the only plan of your night. Make it an experience.
During the day, you can explore Mexico City by bike or on a walking food tour, discover some of the city’s neighborhoods, enjoy amazing Mexican food, and then take some time to rest before heading to the arena.
Before the match, I recommend having a good dinner and maybe a drink. A cocktail or a beer before Lucha Libre is a great way to relax and get into the mood — just don’t overdo it. You want to enjoy the show, remember the experience, and respect the atmosphere inside the arena.
Some places I recommend:
Kaiju Burger (Puebla 42, Roma Norte) is one of my favorites. Their burgers are seriously good, and they also have craft beer. It is a perfect casual option before heading to Arena México.
If you prefer a more relaxed outdoor atmosphere, Jardín Juárez is a great option. It feels like a beer garden with drinks, food, and a fun atmosphere before a night out.
Other good options:
- BeerGarden Roma — a casual place with a great beer garden vibe, food, and drinks.
- Jardín Chapultepec — another relaxed outdoor option for drinks and food before your match.
- Katz Cocktail Bar — a good option if you prefer cocktails in Roma Norte.
- Maison Artemisia — great cocktails in a beautiful atmosphere if you want something a little more special.
The goal is not to arrive drunk — the goal is to arrive excited. Enjoy some food, have a drink, relax, and then go experience one of the most energetic shows in Mexico City.
