Sunday Menu: Mexico Off the Beaten Track
We like to be honest with you from the start because we’re travelers too: this tour only works on Sundays. We don’t have vegetarian, vegan, or pescatarian options on Sundays. The places we visit during the week are closed, so we take the opportunity to share with you traditional dishes that are only served on Sundays. If you can only join us that day and prefer something simpler, like quesadillas, please write to us and we’ll gladly discuss it. Keep in mind that it will be a very simple menu, as this tour is designed to enjoy the authentic Sunday food experience. But remember, from Monday to Saturday, we have no problem offering a vegetarian menu.
Now, get ready to enjoy a menu full of authentic flavors. We begin with a delicious traditional sweet bread breakfast, like the classic “conchas,” which will make you feel like you’re surrounded by friends from the very start. To go along with it, you can choose from coffee, tea, hot chocolate, or any hot beverage you prefer.
Next is something you definitely can’t miss: our barbacoa de borrego. Barbacoa is a traditional Mexican dish made with lamb that cooks for over 24 hours in an underground oven. In Mexico, barbacoa de borrego is a unique delicacy that you don’t want to miss! You’ll enjoy it with a refreshing agua fresca. It’s something really special that is only served on Sundays at local markets.
After this feast, we take a break with some fresh fruit or ice cream, and if you’re lucky, you’ll get to try our “nieve de queso” (cheese ice cream), a unique dessert that is a true classic in Mexico.
Next up, it’s time to enjoy pulque, an ancestral drink that dates back to pre-Hispanic times, long before tequila and mezcal! This drink is still prepared in ancient ways, and we enjoy it in different flavors.
Before we finish, we treat ourselves to tacos de chorizo con almendras y arándanos (chorizo tacos with almonds and cranberries) or tacos de carnero (lamb tacos) for those who don’t eat pork, a dish we’ve only found at a local market. The contrast between the sweetness of almonds and cranberries with the spiciness of chorizo is something you won’t find anywhere else.
Finally, we toast with a michelada in the style of Mexico City, just the way we enjoy it in the neighborhood where we live.
