Is it worth going to Lucha Libre?

These are some of the questions that some people ask themselves when they travel to Mexico City, because it seems that it is something that is very popular, but they don’t want to be the “tourists” and be with more “tourists” – because who wants to go to see something like that and not something that is really unique to the place you are visiting.

In my case I have been a fan of Lucha Libre for 25 years and it is something that I still love, because although I know it is a show and that many of the stunts have been practiced before, it is something that fills me with energy and happiness and I will share with you what I have learned so you can enjoy it and it is not complicated.

Is Lucha Libre a tourist attraction?

Yes and no.

Since about 10 years ago the first tours for foreigners started in a more formal way, because previously some people heard about this and organized a route to see this show with some guides in Mexico City or went on their own because wrestling is something that has been in Mexico for many years. However, people like me who are fans of Lucha Libre, like to go with our Mexican friends on a Friday to drink beer, hang out with your friends, have a good time, shout rude words and laugh a lot, because you can see Mexican families having a great time, from the kid who is super passionate about his favorite wrestler and wearing a mask, to the grandmother who has been a fan of Lucha Libre for years and shows her passion every time a wrestler says something wrong (yes, I’ve seen it more than once lol).

In the same way I could say that yes, now it is a bit of a tourist attraction, because the number of travelers visiting Mexico City has increased in the last 10 years as many have realized that Mexico City has magic and very interesting things like big cities such as New York, London, Berlin, etc. Therefore, the curiosity of travelers wanting to know what happens in the arenas of Lucha Libre has increased.

Why I would recommend going to Lucha Libre

Lucha Libre is something very traditional in Mexico City, and although many think, I do not like wrestling, it is something that is totally different, it is very different from the United States, here it is more acrobatic, fast, sometimes even funny and I could say that even a little interactive, because we as Mexicans although we know it is a show and sometimes we know that the favorite will win, we like to fill us with passion to literally see them fly and of course their masks make them even more interesting.

How to get tickets for Lucha Libre?

The easiest way is to get them through ticketmaster:

https://www.ticketmaster.com.mx/

However, both nationals and foreigners often have problems to buy them, since it seems that everything is fine and at the moment of making the payment it never approves it, we recommend you to try several times or with different cards, since even with Mexican debit or credit cards it doesn’t work very well either, since their system is not very effective.

If you buy them online don’t buy the ones that say FREEDOM, they are very expensive and it’s like a VIP area and the interesting thing about Lucha Libre is to experience it among locals blaspheming and being passionate about Lucha.

Another way is to buy them directly at the Arena and there are almost always tickets available, the difference is that sometimes if it is a special fight you might not find tickets in the first row, but don’t worry, most of the locals don’t buy tickets in that section and we will tell you why.

Remember not to buy tickets outside the Arena where some people are offering them as they may be fake tickets, always at the official box office (taquilla) in the Arena and you can even pay by card.

Lucha Libre Schedule: Location: Arena Mexico Dr. Lavista 189, Doctores, Cuauhtémoc, 06720 Mexico City, CDMX, Mexico Schedule: Tuesday: 19:30 Friday: 20:30 Sunday: 17:00 Arena Coliseo: Location: República de Perú 77, Centro Histórico de la Cdad. de México, Centro, Cuauhtémoc, 06010 Mexico City, CDMX, Mexico. Schedule Saturday:19:30 We think the best day to go is on a Friday and the best place of course is the Arena Mexico, but if you don't have time to go on this day or to this Arena, you will still enjoy the show in Arena Coliseo. Just be aware that the Arena Coliseo is a little smaller and closer to a rather sketchy area of Mexico City (Tepito) but therefore visited by more locals.

Things you should know:

  • Bring cash.
  • Buy tickets in advance.
  • The best day to go to Lucha Libre is Friday.
  • Don’t buy FREEDOM tickets, they are expensive and not the best.
  • Don’t buy tickets in the first row, as you can’t see much from there, we recommend you better from the 8th or 10th row, besides you will be among the locals.
  • They only sell beer and it costs around 5 or 6 USD per glass.
  • Have a pre-game an hour before Lucha Libre starts with some good drinks and get a little drunk so you will be more relaxed to blaspheme in Spanish (video coming soon to do it properly), Jardin Juarez is the best place for us as it is a 2-minute walk from Arena Mexico and has good drinks.
  • Go with an open mind and enjoy it, support a team and scream at the same time as everyone else, immerse yourself so you can enjoy it like the people of Mexico City do.
